Over 600,000 individuals go missing in the United States each year. Fortunately, many are quickly found, alive and well. However, tens of thousands of individuals including children remain missing long term. Nationwide, the number of reported cases of missing persons is estimated around 80,000 to 100,000 and a large number of those remain unidentified in the custody of the medical examiner's offices, without inclusion into national identification databases. Yet, the total number of missing persons is actually unknown and most likely much higher as some persons have never been reported as missing. The Suffolk County Missing Persons Day aims to increase public’s awareness of missing persons and offer support to families and friends of missing persons. This event is to be an avenue of hope and support to the community and a reminder that we have not forgotten the missing persons.
