The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention’s mission is to save lives and bring hope to those affected by suicide. Since 2004, AFSP’s Out of the Darkness Walks have built a movement to raise awareness and funds to fight this leading cause of death. Together, our community sends the message that you are never alone, that healing is possible, and when we connect, we create hope.
Our community’s dedication is stronger than ever as we introduce the Long Island Out of the Darkness Experience taking place on Sunday, October 25th at Jones Beach, where you can safely connect, support one another, and share stories and life-saving resources. No matter what your connection to suicide, by joining the Long Island Experience, you can show people that we are strong, we are resilient, and we are hopeful. Together, we can create a culture that’s smart about mental health.
The 2020 Long Island Out of the Darkness Experience will be a Drive-Up Event where you will participate in your Car!
Similar to a Drive-in Movie, we will have the opening ceremony take place on a JUMBO screen in the parking lot with audio play on your FM car radio. There will be opportunities for us to include tributes and meaningful activities for all of our participants, recognize our top teams and individuals, and our sponsors. We will be able to feature photos and stories of why you participate and who you are honoring and/or supporting.
We will NOT be walking at all during this event. NY State restrictions on the number of people who can gather prohibit us from doing that, HOWEVER, we do not want that to deter you from participating. We are working hard to ensure that the event is meaningful and powerful, something you will want to be part of.
Until we meet at the event, we wanted you to be able to share your stories so we created a Memorial Wall/Why Wall for you to share pictures and stories of your loved ones. We encourage you to share your story and tell us your why.
